URGENT: House Massing and High Ceilings – Aug 2015

In April 2105 Richmond City Council directed staff to come up with solutions to deal with MEGA houses that tower over existing homes in established neighbourhoods taking away their privacy and sunlight.

Staff came up with Bylaw # 9279 which I call the ” Peoples Bylaw” to limit ceiling heights to 12′ ( 3.7m ) before the area is counted as twice the square footage . On July 27th 2015 City council rejected the staff recommendation and instead sent bylaw # 9280 which I call the ” Builders Bylaw” to Public hearing on Sept 8th, this bylaw allows for ceiling to remain unchanged from current bylaws at 16′ 4″ ceilings ( 5m ) before the space is counted as twice the square footage. Councilors Day and Steves voted against this bylaw.

If you are concerned about the size of houses and the overall massing Now is the time to speak up and let Mayor and councilors know how you feel. Email mayorandcouncillors@richnmond.ca
